Based on the Picture Exchange Communication System (PECS), PicWords uses photos as a way for children or adults with difficulties communicating to express their thoughts and desires. As with a PECS book, with PicWords, the individual saves the picture of a preferred item or activity, labels it, and later opens the application to show their parent/guardian/etc., what it is they would like. This could be a snack they’re in the mood for, a game they want to play, or a toy that they’re looking for. PECS is the most widely used tool for children with Autism and other communication difficulties. And with this simplified version, families can now give their loved ones a chance to learn the benefits of visual communication before ever attending speech therapy. This is not a replacement for speech therapy, but it can be used as a tool to aide in developing communication.
